This morning I am inspired to write about why families with special needs children give up on their dreams.

After posting a quote on my fb wall and getting some feedback from my friends. This is what I came up with to help families with special needs children follow their dreams.

The first thing that I would say being a mom of a special needs child is be aware of fear. Fear of the unknown will keep you imprisoned in your own mind and depressed!

you spend many years wondering, hoping and praying, trying to figure out how to raise your child with special needs. How will care for both their physical and financial needs and work a fulltime job?

In most cases, all of your energy goes toward your children and working a job. At the end of the day, you’re exhausted and possibly depressed.

If you don’t do anything about it, you can stay in that rut for years to come. Some people stay there for a lifetime! Whereas others make a decision that they want out, they want to do something greater. They want more out of life. They begin to explore the possibilities.

Since I have walked down that road, what I would say is begin with your passion, what is it that you love doing, what is it that wakes you up in the morning and wants you to run and go do it right away… What are you good at and love doing even if you didn’t get paid?

Be careful about being so busy following other people’s dreams, that you forget about your dream. That is unless your dream is to help se others dreams come true. Everyone has not been called to lead!

I need for you to get really clear on what it is that you want and love to do in life?

When you discover what it is that you really want to do that is when you will begin to see the manifestation of your dreams begin to come true.

When I think about the Bible and the story of Joseph and how he had a dream about ruling over his brothers someday. There were many things that he had to learn 1st in order to achieve that dream. A lot of times God wants us to humble ourselves 1st. He wants to teach us something. The question is, are we taking action on what he is teaching us? Are we taking notes and applying what He is telling us to do?

Are we humbling ourselves and allowing him to guide our footsteps, or are we avoiding him altogether not seeking his face for His direction?

He’s calling your name. He wants to be that support to you when it seems like all your friends have turned their back on you. He wants you to know He is there in the midnight hour.when the tears won’t stop falling! When you feel hopeless and don’t know where to turn. Or you can’t figure out what to do, He wants you to reach out to Him and call His name and know that he is there ready to lift you up.

Now that you know your passion and now that you have put your life in the hands of the almighty God, you can move forward with courage and soar to achieve everything He has given you to do, even with having a child with special needs.

Just realize this there are stages in a dream. There is a process you must go through 1st. You may not get there overnight, but if you keep your hands to the plow and don’t look back, you, too, my friend will reach your dream like Joseph did!

My friend also don’t forget fear will rob you of many years of what God has for you. It will have you in the prison of your own mind for many years, possibly you will take it with you to your grave!

In the meantime, avoid negative people. Run from them as if they have the plague. Otherwise known as dream killers.
Stop worrying about what other people think. What other people say is not your responsibility. The only thing you must do is take charge of what you have, take that ambition and run with it…

Along the way, don’t be afraid to find someone who has done what you want to do and ask them to mentor you. Ask them if they will help you through the process, you’re not giving them the load to carry only asking for guidance along the way. Be sure take action on the advice they give otherwise they will not take you seriously, you will have wasted their time and you will live a life of procrastination

Most important get Godly wisdom and His direction.

Last but not least being a mother of a special needs child brings about social isolation and many emotional challenges. At some point, it requires for you to trust somebody. Pray and ask God to bring people into your life that will support you. People that will encourage you, that will be there for you on this journey of raising a child with special needs and pursue your dream. Don’t forget to show them you appreciate them whether in words or deeds.

I will tell you, my friend, It’s not easy raising a child with special needs and pursuing your dreams at the same time, but I’m here to tell you to be grateful, greater is your reward and that you can do it all things through Christ who strengthens you! God bless you and Shalom!
